Have you ever wondered just how many tons of plastic waste are dumed into the ocean each year? According to a blog on the New York Times website about 7 million tons are dumped into the ocean every year. This number was shocking to me. This plastic is now slowly breaking down and ending up in the stomachs of fish. Companies should not dump their waste plastic into the ocean and alternative ways to clear waste plastic should be found.
A new study has found that in the North Pacific ocean alone, fish swallow between 12,000 and 24,000 tons of plastic a year. This number is completely unacceptable and refelcts upon the unhealthy amounts of plastic that are dumped into the ocean every single year. These numbers are also alarming scientist and environmentalist alike. Doug Woodring, the co founder of a non profit organization called Project Kaisei that supports research on waste plastic in the ocean, said "our ecosystem and environment is paying the price. The aggregation of plastic waste, even in remote places, is now evident to the point where the hope for dilution or turning our heads on the problem is no longer a solution." A solution to the waste project problem must be solved. Fish can not continue to swollow plastic, it is not good for them and it is absolutely not good for our oceans. Plastic can be recycled, new technology can even turn plstic into oil! there is no need to outsource plastic to our oceans.

ReplyDeleteDear Audrey,
ReplyDeleteI was shocked by your post, I had no idea that so much plastic was being tossed into the ocean. This seems completely ridiculous, it is not fair for us to just toss our unwanted materials in the habitats of the fish and other sea life. You stated that " about 7 million tons are dumped into the ocean every year." that number literally stopped me. That is a tremendous about of plastic that should be disposed of in other ways. We obviously need to stop dumbing our unwanted plastic in the oceans and start to do other things like recycle. Thanks so much for this post and look forward to reading more from you.
Dear Audrey,
ReplyDeleteI was very shocked by your post. I didnt know that much plastic went into the ocean, and even got eaten by fish! That is crazy!
"According to a blog on the New York Times website about 7 million tons are dumped into the ocean every year." This quote really stuck out to me, Becuase 7 millions tons of plastic is ridiculous!
"Fish can not continue to swollow plastic, it is not good for them and it is absolutely not good for our oceans." this quote also stuck out to me, becuase I agree completely, fish can not keep swallowing plastic.
Thank you so much for writing this post! It really was an eye opener about how much plastic is in the ocean! and was very interesting!
Dear Audrey,
ReplyDeleteThe statistics that you posted were shocking to me. I had no idea that there was that large amount of waste in our ecosystem. It is sad to hear that fish are swallowing these substances and are being affected by it. I agree with you on your argument when you commented about a “new study has found that in the North Pacific ocean alone, fish swallow between 12,000 and 24,000 tons of plastic a year. This number is completely unacceptable and refelcts upon the unhealthy amounts of plastic that are dumped into the ocean every single year.” It is crazy to think that 24,000 tons of waste is being consumed by our marine life. I also believe that “ [companies] should not dump their waste plastic into the ocean.” It should not be up to them where the waste goes and there really should be better alternatives to removing the plastic waste. I was really interested by your blog. It made me think of what I do with my plastic bottles and other plastics. I look to forward to your next blog!
Sincerely,

Dear Audrey,
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with the subject you are discussing. I believe that a solution to this waste problem should definitely be solved. I don't think these animals swallowing this plastic should have to suffer for something ignorant that humans do. Espeically if it is happening in their very own homes.
When you stated that fish swallow 12,000 to 24,000 tons of plastic a year really stood out to me. This is something that does not need to be happening.
I completely agree that there is no need to outsource plastic to our oceans like you said. I agree with this because there are other ways of disposing the plastic rather than just dumping into the ocean where thousands of animals live.
Thank you for writing this blog and I look forward to coming back to your blog to learn more about corporation's effects on the environment.
